Glaciar Perito Moreno's sparkling walls of ice dazzle | Our tour bus rounded a curve in el Parque Nacional los Glaciares, and I gasped. Even from afar, the immense frozen river is astounding. Perito Moreno's massive white and blue walls etched with thin layers of dark sand and dirt contrast with the rock walls the glacier grinds past. Enough said. My words cannot do justice! Maggie and I took a mini-trekking tour of Perito Moreno with park concessioners Hielo & Aventura www.hieloyaventura.com In addition to the balcony viewing overlooking the glacier, our tour included a ferry across Rico Lago to the southern shore where we hiked along the beach before strapping crampons onto our shoes. We trekked with a group of about 15 people for two hours on the glacier. The main guide, Luis of the bulging biceps, took special care that Maggie's crampons fitted her boots perfectly. |
Traveling lightly, I only had cross-training jogging shoes, which made the hike a little more difficult but manageable. My greatest fear was sinking my foot into a shallow pool of cold water and soaking my feet. The guides held out a hand when necessary. No dangerous crevasses on the tour, only delicious pools of aquamarine water, wind- and sun-carved ice sculptures and glistening formations towering overhead. To protect the glacier, only professional guides can take tourists through a limited section of the glacier. A Big Ice Tour is also available but did not fit our schedule, and I'm glad we signed onto the mini-trekking, as the only difference is an extended time on the glacier with some more technical stretches that still do not require ropes.
