The next day Jane and I rode the train to Toledo. With just a slight hangover, I followed Jane as we hiked up the hill and through the city to our hostal, wishing I had not packed quite so many books nor my tennis shoes. After I took a much needed nap next to the pool, we caught the open-air tourist train for a night-time tour around the town. The view from across the Tagus River with the lights shining on the cathedral, the synagogue, the ancient walls and el alcazar is enchanting. Upon our return to the city center, we discovered a flamenco concert in the plaza next to the cathedral. Hearing the beautiful music and singing while watching the Spanish women fanning themselves with the cathedral towering over us, just truly AWESOME!
The next day I checked into a room in downtown Madrid. Jane referred to it as a "sad little room" but I loved it. Large enough for a tiny bed, tiny sink, tiny closet and a tiny desk and my not so tiny backpack and bag, with a bathroom down the hall. I wandered around Madrid on my own, finding people-watching the best entertainment. The gypsies never tried to steal me and I loved seeing the colorful styles of the women of Madrid, who have a monopoly on eclectic combinations of clothing, shoes and hair color. My favorite was a woman of at least 60 with purple highlights in an almost mini-skirt made from some sort of leopard print!
The next morning I met up with Jane and Carlos for more Spanish delicacies, including horse meat, and a walk through Buen Retiro park followed by a visit to Del Prado Museum of Art. Carlos decided not to join us for the museum, and after two hours of Goya, Velazquez, et al., Jane and I needed some refreshment. We stopped at the Circulo de Bellas Artes riding the elevator to the rooftop bar for the sunset and a tremendous 360' view of the city. We basked in the sunset, the afterglow and watching Madrid light up like a Christmas tree. We didn't get home until way past midnight (Lo siento Carlos!) The next morning I made my train to Girona with just a slight hangover.
