I spent the entire next day wandering through the city's curving stone-paved walkways and narrow streets, visiting museums in medieval stone buildings formerly used as synagogues, monasteries and an Arab bath house, eating paella and drinking vino rioja at the outdoor cafes. I visited a farmer's market in the park across el Rio Onyar and bought my meals for the day as I'm missing my vegetables. I walked the walls in the evening and watched the sun set behind the mountains and the full moon rise. My camera battery had died after taking a million pictures, but no picture could do justice to such an amazing vista. I tried the next night, missing the actual sunset but caught some of the afterglow.
My visit to Girona provided a comprehensive introduction to Spain's varied history and culture, from the earliest Iberian settlers to present-day political struggles for an independent Catalunya.
Unfortunately for my figure, I discovered a delicious deep fried dough concoction dipped in chocolate. Before leaving town I'd eaten three of them! Today I'm heading for Tossa de Mar, hoping I can still squeeze into my bikini!
